Wines.........
The
Triton is probably the only
pub or restaurant in East Yorkshire
offering over 30 wines by the glass. We are able to do this because all
opened bottles are immediately resealed using a state of the art Verre
d’Vin
machine. A special
rubber stopper is inserted and a vacuum pump removes the air from the
bottle. This stops the wine oxidizing. Simply putting a cork back in
the bottle would allow the air to react with the wine, turning it ‘off’
within a day or two. You can therefore always be sure that any
wine served by the glass at The Triton is as fresh as when we uncorked
the bottle.
We
source our wines from several local and national vintners. By our
not
being tied to any one supplier, customers can be confident that we
offer a wide range of wines in our
Lounge bar and in Poseidon's Restaurant.
We are
always looking for good
ideas for our wine list - all
suggestions are welcomed, so do tell us about YOUR favourite.
Currently, our 'house
wines' are by Rafine; we find their house white, house red and
house rosé wines just delicious. They are ideal for quaffing,
don't leave a bitter "after-taste" as do many wines offered as house
wines. Since we arsted selling them in 2008 we have found that many of
our customers ask for them by name. If you haven't tried rafine
yet, why not ask for a small taster next time you are in the Triton -
we won't give you a glass full, just enough for you to (probably) say
"Mmm, that's quite nice - I'll have a full glass of that please."
Of course, everyone's taste differs, and you may well want to try some
of the more elegant or exotic wines we stock at the Triton:

From
time to time, usually due to unprecedented demand or supplier
difficulties,
we may
run out of one or gtwo wines. Our staff wikll always be happy to advise
a similar wine as a substitute.
And finally just a few
words on the cost of a bottle of wine -
The duty payable on a bottle of wine is always the same amount, no
matter what the value or price of the bottle. The actual amount is now
£1.61 per bottle for still wines, and £2.04 for sparkling
wines. The duty on spirits is now almost £6 a bottle!
By comparison, in France, the duty on wine is 4 pence - so we in the UK
pay up to 51 times more in duty on a bottle of wine than the French are
charged. And some people still claim that the European Union is all
about equality and harmonisation !
In addition to the duty, we obliged to charge VAT on all drinks, so the
Chancellor is receiving over £3 each time you buy a bottle.
The duty remains the same however, so higher price wines see a
proportionately higher amount of what you pay going back to the
grower. As the grower gets a better price the more we pay for
wine, so the better quality of wine.
Cheap wine is not always the bargain
it seems!
There's
always a warm welcome at The Triton,
whwew
we
believe that the art of making people welcome
is
one worth preserving.
